REVITALIZING YOUR SUBSTRATE MIX ON A REGULAR BASIS
REVITALIZING YOUR SUBSTRATE MIX ON A REGULAR BASIS
Our main aim when we grow plants, be it in a garden or a hydroponic system, is to have them thrive and create high yields. All living things need nutrition, and plants are no exception. They need macronutrients like carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and potassium to survive. But they also need other minerals, called secondary macronutrients and micronutrients to stay healthy, grow properly and deliver better yields. Calcium and Magnesium are two of the most important secondary macronutrients vital for healthy plants. Used in relatively large quantities by plants and therefore important to provide regular supplements for your plants. These minerals, along with the micronutrients, also contribute to the plant’s ionic balance. Hy-pro Cal/mag is great for improving the health of soil plants and it is an essential ingredient for hydroponic nutrient control.
**MAGNESIUM IS KEY TO PHOTOSYNTHESIS
MAGNESIUM IS THE POWERHOUSE BEHIND PHOTOSYNTHESIS IN PLANTS.
Magnesium constitutes the core of the chlorophyll molecule and is therefore essential for photosynthesis. This makes it an indispensable element for plant development. Magnesium promotes the absorption and transportation of phosphorus. It contributes to the storage of sugars within the plant. Magnesium performs the function of an enzyme activator, and in fact activates more enzymes than any other nutrient. Magnesium is also used by plants for the metabolism of carbohydrates and in the cell membrane stabilization. Magnesium deficiencies result in weak stalks, loss of greenness in the oldest leaves, and the appearance of yellow and brown spots, even though the leaves’ veins remain green.
**CALCIUM IS KEY TO PLANT DEVELOPMENT
CALCIUM REGULATES NUTRIENT TRANSPORT AND SUPPORTS MANY ENZYME FUNCTIONS
Calcium is an essential element needed for growth and development of plants under both non-stressed and stress conditions. It thereby fulfills a dual function, being not only an important factor for cell wall and membrane stability, but also serving as a second messenger in many developmental and physiological processes, including the response of plants to biotic stress. Calcium attaches to the walls of plant tissues, stabilizing the cell wall and favoring cell wall formation. Calcium is also involved in cell growth and development. It neutralizes toxic substances in plants and contributes to seed formation. A calcium insufficiency causes yellow and brown spots on the leaves. It also slows plant growth in general.
Hy-Pro Cal/Mag can be used with a variety of soil, hydroponic and cocopeat substrates. Hy-Pro additives work best with Hy-Pro fertilizers.
